Chicago Virtual Charter School Makes 2009 Illinois Honor Roll

The Chicago Virtual Charter School (CVCS), a public charter school using the K12® curriculum and school services, was named to the 2009 Illinois Honor Roll.

The Illinois Honor Roll celebrates the outstanding academic accomplishments of exemplary public schools in the state.

CVCS has demonstrated strong academic results over multiple years. The school made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2008 and 2009, and also posted considerable gains in both reading and math, thus earning it the Academic Improvement Award and entry into the 2009 Illinois Honor Roll.

In a letter to the CVCS Principal, State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch wrote, “On behalf of the State Board of Education, I commend you and your staff for all the hard work required to help students demonstrate academic improvement over the last three years.”

CVCS was one of ten charter schools in the state to make the Illinois Honor Roll and one of 147 public schools in the state to win an Academic Improvement Award.

“I’m proud that our school has not only made AYP over consecutive years, but also achieved the high level of academic growth necessary to earn this award,” said Rudy Martin, President of the CVCS Board of Directors. “This recognition is a credit to the remarkable work of our students, parents, teachers, and K12 school administrators, and their commitment to academic excellence.”

“It’s a great honor for our school to be named to the Illinois Honor Roll,” said Dr. Bruce Law, CVCS Head of School. “CVCS is an innovative, one-of-a-kind public school program in Chicago that has proven to be successful for many children.”

CVCS is a public charter school serving approximately 600 students in grades K-11. It uses an innovative hybrid school model that blends virtual learning – where students access online courses and interact with teachers remotely – with high-tech, classroom-based instruction. The school uses the award-winning curriculum and services provided by K12 Inc., the largest provider of online school programs and proprietary curriculum to students in kindergarten through high school.

CVCS was granted a charter by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in 2006 with support from then-Superintendent of CPS Arne Duncan. The school is governed by an independent, non-profit Board of Directors composed of community leaders. More information on the school can be found at www.K12.com/cvcs.
