PR Log - Feb 26, 2012 - Portsmouth, VA – Compassion Advocacy Network, which ministers to a multitude of nursing home residents and to inner city young people ages five to eighteen in the greater Hampton Roads area, announced today it has named Dr. Mildred Summerville as its new executive vice president.

Dr. Summerville, the founder of Teaching Academics for Life Learning, a non-profit youth educational services outreach ministry in Wilson, NC, will be in charge of developing mentoring and out-of-school programs that support at-risk, low and moderate income students. Compassion Advocacy Network, which has exclusively focused its attention in Hampton Roads, VA, will expand its Neighborhood Outreach Works™ (NOW) efforts into North Carolina and then nationally. Dr. Summerville will spearhead this drive.

Neighborhood Outreach Works™ takes children on excursions into the community.  Each excursion is designed to build friendship relationships, broaden horizons and increase each child’s awareness of their own potential.  NOW provides the transportation, admission fees and a meal.

One of the most significant factors influencing high school dropout rates is family income. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students from low-income families are six times more likely to drop out of high school than students from high-income families. In expanding NOW, additional goals of the program are to increase academic performance and reduce negative behavior, thus leading to a reduction in suspensions and drop-out rates.

According to Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Cohort Reports, The Hampton Roads region's high school dropout rate (for the cohort of students that entered ninth grade four years earlier) increased from 9.3 percent in 2008-09 to 9.7 percent in 2009-10. High School dropout rates in the region exceed the state average of 8.2 percent.

Before joining Compassion Advocacy Network, Dr. Summerville oversaw Summerville Academy’s structured day program called Project EXCEL for Wilson County students who have received five to ten days of suspension.  Summerville Academy students complete classroom assignments from their base school and participate in anger management and conflict resolution classes. In addition, students enhance their learning using technology tools, the Internet, and web-based lesson plans.

Compassion Advocacy Network looks forward to Dr. Summerville putting together a well-trained staff that will help develop an after-school program that will provide safe and structured academic and recreational activities; increase state and local assessment scores and academic success for participating students; establish partnerships and encourage collaboration among community agencies in order to support NOW and create a flexible parent/community education program to meet the diverse needs of the population.

Prior to Summerville Academy, Dr. Summerville served as an assistant principal and principal in Wilson County schools in charge of curriculum, staff supervisor, and discipline. Her other professional activities include: Coach; Athletic Director; Lead Teacher; Curriculum Specialist; Accreditation Visiting Committee Member- Tarboro City Schools, Wilson County Schools. Concert Promotions: Pastor Shirley Caesar, Bishop F.C. Barnes;    Nu Beginnings; Luther Barnes; and the late Albertina Walker, Sensational Nightingales and playwright/executive producer of the award winning play: Spare the Rod. Spoil the Child.

Dr. Summerville has a doctorate of humane letter from Interdenominational Bible Institute Lawrenceville, VA; Certificate-Educational Administration East Carolina University, Greenville NC; Master of Education from Bowling Green State University Bowling Green, OH; and Bachelor of Science from Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, NC.
