PR Log - Apr 27, 2012 - Ms. Georgi will be replacing Dr. Gillan Smith, Ph.D., who has joined the clinical team at Aspiro Wilderness Adventure Therapy. The clinical program at Carlbrook School has grown tremendously under the leadership of Dr. Smith and he will be greatly missed.
Over the course of the almost five years that Dr. Smith has served as Clinical Director for Carlbrook, he has delivered a masterful set of improvements and upgraded the collective clinical acumen of the school. During his tenure at Carlbrook, programs have been developed to initiate substantive family work, comprehensive substance abuse programming, enhanced test interpretation and multidisciplinary dialogue amongst professionals. Carlbrook has steadily progressed under Dr. Smith’s guidance and unflagging commitment; the Board owes a great deal of thanks and gratitude for all that he has accomplished for the school.
As difficult as it may be to lose Dr. Smith, Carlbrook is looking forward to the extensive background and clinical expertise that Becky Georgi promises to contribute to its Board of Regents. Ms. Georgi has spent over 25 years working with adolescents and their families, with a particular emphasis on substance abuse education and treatment. She holds a faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and most recently served as the Senior Counselor at Durham Academy in North Carolina. Ms. Georgi received her Master of Science degree in Education and Counseling at Indiana University at Bloomington, and also holds a certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Menninger Clinic. In addition, she is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist and a Certified Clinical Supervisor.
Prior to focusing her efforts in education, Ms. Georgi worked as the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program Director at the Duke University Addictions Program. She is also the co-founder of Georgi Educational & Counseling Services (GECS), a nationally recognized consortium of educators, scientists and clinicians dedicated to spanning the gap between research and its application in schools. Ms. Georgi has further worked on several projects and published papers related to adolescent development and health with colleagues from both Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The research interests of Ms. Georgi range from marijuana and the adolescent brain, communication between parents and students about substance use, bullying, student interrelationships, sexual harassment, sexual assault and dating violence.
In addition, Ms. Georgi and her husband, Jeff Georgi, M.Div., M.A.H, CCAS, LPC, CGP, have worked over the past six years to develop an intensive Recovery Maintenance and Substance Abuse Prevention program at Carlbrook School. Having an intimate knowledge of Carlbrook and its programming affords Ms. Georgi with the opportunity to transition quickly into her role at the school. As Carlbrook moves into its second decade of working with adolescents and their families, the expertise and experience that Ms. Georgi brings will undoubtedly foster the continued growth and development of the school and its programming.
