Political Drama, Cowboy Action and the Wild West Come Together in Guy Franks' Novel, Railhead

By: PRLog
The spirit of the Wild West comes to life in Guy Franks’ most recent novel, Railhead, which tells the story of journalist Pete Hammond as he works with other pioneers to bring a city to life.

PRLog - May 22, 2013 - HAMPSTEAD, Md. -- Finally, a novel in which readers can interact with the people they have read about in history textbooks and where the past comes to life. Guy Franks’ Railhead is that time machine we have all dreamed about that carries us back to the 19th century American Frontier. Pete Hammond is an east coast journalist who travels out west on the Union Pacific Railroad to try and find stories for his newspaper. What he finds is a complex group of people who are trying to forge a life for themselves amidst the violent frontier. Pete carries us through a world of political drama, seedy underground crime networks, and Wild West “shoot ‘em up” action. The world of Railhead is one where good triumphs over evil and where the characters learn to make a home in a place that seems uninhabitable.

A unique aspect of this novel is that Franks draws heavily on the life of former president Ronald Reagan as the embodiment of the main character Robert Riordan. With rich allegory, that is at times is obvious and at other times concealed within nail biting action, Franks has created a politician that readers can easily love and trust. As Riordan attempts to bring a city to life, he surrounds himself with a cast of characters who redefine our stereotypes of western settlers, such as the rough and tough U.S. Marshal with a tragic past, the angelic beauty working as a prostitute and even the kind, overqualified doctor. Franks even allows his readers to interact with historical figureheads, with appearances from Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
