PRLog - Jun 11, 2013 - BETHESDA, Md. -- PlanetiQ LLC, a commercial provider of satellite data critical to accurate weather forecasting, space weather prediction and climate monitoring worldwide, announced today that Timothy Puckorius has been hired as Senior Vice President of Business Development. Puckorius is a 26-year veteran in the satellite remote sensing industry with a proven track record in building successful Earth observation startups, and extensive experience in business development, marketing, sales and operations with the world’s largest remote sensing companies.

Prior to joining PlanetiQ, Puckorius was Founder and CEO of Earth Observation Technologies LLC, where he managed the global sale and distribution of products and services for a number of remote sensing companies including GeoEye Inc. (now DigitalGlobe). Previously he served as Senior Vice President for International Marketing and Business Development at GeoEye, where he was the principal architect in creating a commercial industry for satellite imagery, secured over $210 million in pre-launch contracts, and helped win the NextView II contract from the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency worth $519 million.

“Timothy brings an outstanding record of success in management of global sales and business development in the areas of remote sensing and Earth observations,” said Anne Hale Miglarese, President and CEO of PlanetiQ. “His passion for building relationships in the U.S. and overseas will be instrumental in pioneering public-private partnerships in satellite weather and climate data, much as he did previously for satellite imagery.”

Puckorius has also held senior and executive positions at Orbital Imaging Corp., Space Imaging Inc. and Earth Observation Satellite Company (EOSAT), the first commercial operators of the LANDSAT satellite program. At Space Imaging he orchestrated the commercialization of India’s entire constellation of remote sensing data satellites, while at EOSAT he expanded the company’s product portfolio by developing new applications for commercial and government markets.

“The commercial weather data sector is ripe for development and I look forward to helping lead the way,” Puckorius said. “PlanetiQ is uniquely poised to lead this burgeoning industry both in the U.S. and abroad, and to meet the soaring global demand for sustained and affordable environmental data.”

About PlanetiQ

PlanetiQ is raising private funds to build a network of small satellites for sustained and rapid delivery of critical data required for accurate weather forecasting, space weather prediction and climate monitoring, at a lower cost and with less risk to public and private stakeholders worldwide. PlanetiQ plans to partner with government and commercial users of environmental data to mitigate developing data gaps caused by aging government satellites and a broken system for replacing them.

Backed by Moog, Moog Broad Reach, and Millennium Engineering and Integration, which together have more than 70 years of experience in building, flying and operating state-of-the-art satellites and space systems, PlanetiQ believes that end-users are best served when incentives are set up to favor the rapid delivery of high-quality data. Data consumers pay only when data is delivered, thus PlanetiQ is incentivized to deliver the highest-quality, highest-quantity data at the lowest cost and soonest.

PlanetiQ is initially focused on supplying a reliable and affordable stream of data derived from GPS Radio Occultation (GPS-RO), a highly precise technique for collecting atmospheric temperature, pressure and water vapor data from space. GPS-RO data is among the top contributors to forecast accuracy and the most cost-effective. Recent research shows that much more of this data than would be provided by currently planned missions is needed to meet the existing and future demands of weather forecasting, space weather prediction and climate monitoring.

PlanetiQ will collect approximately 5.5 million observations per day, and plans to provide archived data at no cost to research and education users.
