9th Forum for the Future Final Report Released

PRLog - Jun 12, 2013 - WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of State released the final publication of the 2012 G8 Broader Middle East and North Africa (BMENA) Initiative, available in Arabic and English: http://mepi.state.gov/bmena.html

It is rare that government, civil society, and private sector leaders can reach common ground for political, social, and economic reforms.  This was accomplished under the auspices of the 2012 G8 BMENA Initiative, co-chaired by the Governments of Tunisia and the United States.  In December 2012, the co-chairs convened the 9th annual Forum for the Future in Tunis; the Forum’s Final Report illustrates the fulfillment of these efforts  and includes the members’ final Declaration (the “Tunis Declaration”), as well as specific  recommendations that resulted from meetings between government officials, civil society, and the private sector in the BMENA region.

The annual ministerial-level Forum for the Future brings together G8 and BMENA governments, the private sector, and civil society leaders to work toward political, social, and economic progress.  The Tunis Declaration was a key achievement of the Forum, and includes strong commitments to advance gender equality and greater political, social, and economic rights and opportunities for women; ensure freedoms of expression and association; promote religious tolerance and reject violence; engage in more open, transparent governance; and make regulatory environments more conducive to entrepreneurship and economic growth.

The Final Report can serve as a tool to capitalize on the support achieved for the 2012 Tunis Declaration, and continue the momentum of collaboration and dialogue on political, social, and economic reform. The U.S. Department of State encourages civil society organizations and private sector leaders across the region – along with those organizations that support them – to use the Tunis Declaration as a means of broadening dialogue with their governments, in order to drive progress and implement these commitments.
