Obama’s visit to Africa in 2013 is expected to be similarly profound. This visit gives the American people images of Africa that are in contrast to the stereotypes many Americans have of Africa. The president quite intentionally begins the visit in Senegal to showcase a country that represents a strong democracy with free and fair elections, and a range of institutions that provide a foundation for sustained good governance, including an independent Supreme Court.
The journey continues to South Africa and to Tanzania. Much of the trip is focused on the economic opportunities between the US and various African countries. Seven out of ten of the world’s fastest growing economies are located in Africa, and Africa presents an attractive environment for US investment.
President Obama is expected to give the defining speech of this visit at the University of Cape Town on Sunday evening.
