Cal Pools Explains Avoiding Summer Time Algae In Pools

Beating Blackspot algae in swimming pools.

Blackspot algae is the most stubborn and hard to eliminate algae a pool owner can get. When the algae gets severe and the pool is covered with it, draining the pool and doing an intense cleaning is the best way to handle the problem, especially in concrete lined pools, said Dan Flayler, a Maryland pool service expert.

“The algae sends threads into the concrete. When it gets really established, you have to get in the pool, scrub the affected areas and pressure wash it with a high-chlorine content wash,” he said. “It it’s bad enough, you have to treat the entire pool. If it’s that bad, you really should call in a pool service.”

If the algae shows up in vinyl-lined, it can be scrubbed off the side with a Telfon-safe cleaning pad. The vinyl is not penetrated like concrete and so the algae comes out easier.

“In that case, you’re still left with the algae in the pool,” Mr. Flayler said. “You need to be sure the chlorine content is high enough to kill it. If not, it’s just going to come back.”

It’s best to take steps to not get the algae in the first place, he said.

“Check your chemical levels daily, especially in the summer. This hot weather causes the chemicals to evaporate out much faster than in cool weather. Hot weather also causes algae to grow faster. It’s a double-punch that you can keep ahead of with daily maintenance,” he said.

Consider adding an algaecide. Blackspot algae is much more chlorine-resistant than the green varieties. Mr. Flayler recommends copper-based algaecides.

“If you have algae spots in your pool, pour the algaecide directly on the affected area,” he said.

Pool shock needs to be done with calcium hypochlorite or sodium hypochlorite. Mr. Flayler said pour the shock on affected areas for best results.
