Dr. Mark A. D’Andrea can’t stay out of the news, but for all the right reasons. The Houston area oncologist, who received his doctorate at the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico has received a trio of awards this year for his work in Radiology, Radiation Oncology and his efforts in ensuring patient comfort and satisfaction.

Firstly, from the Peer Reviewed Professionals group, D’Andrea received recognition for his work in radiation oncology. D’Andrea early in his career spent time the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and was one of the first doctor physicians to implement the latest methods of cancer treatment like Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy.

Secondly, D’Andrea was honored for his 4 star patient satisfaction rating by Talk of the Town, a website dedicated to providing comprehensive research in the area of customer satisfaction for a wide variety of businesses and industries. From their website:

“Data collected from customer reviews, surveys, blogs, social networks, business-rating services, and other honors and accolades [are used] to determine the top consumer-rated businesses across the United States and Canada.”

Lastly, Dr. D’Andrea was featured in H Texas Magazine for the 8th year in a row and was listed as one of their Top Doctors. The honor was determined by polling both readers of the magazine and other doctors.

Most recently, Dr. D’Andrea released this case study of subjects affected by a British Petroleum flaring incident in Texas City, TX. The flare was conducted at a nearby BP facility and dumped about 500,000 pounds of chemicals into the atmosphere including benzene gas.

“Across the board, subjects that were exposed to benzene had significantly elevated white blood cell counts, platelets, and decreased blood urea nitrogen. In addition, exposed subjects had significantly higher levels of alkaline phosphatase, among others. Translation? These people are at high risk of developing hepatic or blood related cancers, as opposed to non-exposed subjects.”

The results of this study may prove instrumental for the affected residents of Texas City who are seeking damages from BP in a class action lawsuit that started this September.

2013 was a big year for “Dr. D” and people are clearly taking notice.
