The present invention is a transdermal patch that delivers analgesic medication through the user’s skin. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the transdermal patch is wearable on the user’s body and delivers medication directly through the user’s skin and into the user’s bloodstream. The transdermal patch serves to provide continued release of medication into the user’s system over an extended period of time in order to eliminate the need to administer additional dosages of medication. The transdermal patch is multilayered and comprises a drug reservoir that contains the analgesic drug for transdermal administration. The drug reservoir is secured to a drugrelease membrane that controls the rate of administration of the drug hrough the user’s skin. The transdermal patch further comprises an adhesive for attaching and holding the transdermal patch in place on the user’s skin. The uppermost layer of the transdermal patch comprises a backing layer that is impermeable to prevent the analgesic drug from entering into the backing layer. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the upper surface of the backing layer comprises a location on which the user may write the date and time at which the transdermal patch is applied to the skin and drug administration begins. Finally, the lowermost layer of the transdermal patch is removable and comprises a protective release liner. The release liner may be removed from the transdermal patch in order to expose the adhesive and allow the user to place the transdermal patch onto his or her skin. The drug is administered through the drug-release membrane. The drug-release membrane controls the rate of administration into the user’s bloodstream.
The transdermal patch of the present invention is available in a number of configurations relating generally to the dosage of the analgesic drug. The transdermal patch may vary in terms of size in order to provide lower dosages for children as well as increased dosages for adults. Additionally, the present invention is not limited with respect to the specific physical design of the transdermal patch and as such, the transdermal patch may vary in terms of shape as well as size.
