Presence Saint Francis Hospital will conduct an open forum robotic surgery training session for its Obstetrics-Gynecological (OB/Gyn) residents on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at the hospital from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The hospital is located at 355 Ridge Avenue in Evanston.

Teresa Tam, MD, board certified obstetrician & gynecologist and COEMIG designee (Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology), will conduct the surgical robotic training session for the doctors who are in the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program.

“Presence Saint Francis is unique in that it is the only community hospital on the North Shore to offer an extensive minimally invasive surgery curriculum for its OB/Gyn residents,” said Roberta Luskin-Hawk, MD, regional president and CEO. “Dr. Tam has been involved in our robotic residency training program at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago since the beginning in 2010. She is passionate about giving our young doctors early exposure, experience and training on the latest robotic technology, and we are thrilled to now bring that expertise to the medical residency program at Presence Saint Francis Hospital,” she added.

The da Vinci Surgical System is a robotic system designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities and offer a state-of-the-art minimally invasive option for major surgery. It allows the surgeon to go through a small incision with miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera so they can see a magnified view of the surgical site. It also increases precision and allows doctors to reach places that were once impossible to access with the human hand.

“One of the most significant new developments is how we are utilizing Firefly Fluorescence Imaging, which allows surgeons to define areas with more blood flow such as tumors and endometriosis,” said Tam.

Using the Firefly technology during robotic surgery, a fluorescent dye is injected into the patient. The dye binds to proteins in the blood cells and gets excited by the infrared laser illuminator from the robotic camera and fluoresces green.

“The abnormal tissues like endometriosis are then far more visible and accessible to treat,” said Dr. Tam.  “The most important advantage of using robotic technology is that when you couple it with extremely well-trained, competent and experienced surgeons, the patient outcomes improve dramatically – a quicker recovery, a shorter hospital stay and the ability to resume an active productive life much sooner,” she added.

This unique opportunity to attend robotic surgery training is open to the media. For more information, please contact Linda O’Dwyer at 847.316.4159.
