John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc./Fisher Nuts

Both John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. (JBSS) and the city of Elgin had a lot to toast at the nut giants Grand Opening ceremony. The company is celebrating its move into new headquarters that share 1.1-million-square feet of space with a new manufacturing and distribution facility in Elgin, just west of Chicago.

As part of the celebration, business associates and area residents were treated to tours of the new facility. They also received a commemorative package of the companys Fisher brand of Deluxe Mixed Nuts. JBSS has been a leading processor of high-quality nuts in the Chicago area since the 1920s.

The new facility is perfect for the growth of our company, said Jeffrey Sanfilippo, CEO of JBSS. The space allows for a 20-to-40-percent increase in capacity. We have an additional 300,000-square-feet and with that bigger footprint, we are able to add new automation to existing lines and have the ability to add new lines based on trends and our customers, he added.

As an illustration of this capacity, Sanfilippo noted that the number of truck docks has tripled. The location serves JBSS well with visibility along major roads and close proximity to the freeway, he said.

Currently, JBSS produces and ships out more than 2,000 products for its private brand customers and its Fisher Nuts brand. A new Fisher Nuts outlet store on the property lets the area residents purchase all types of nuts directly on site.

The new facility houses processing and packing operations as well as research and development with the corporate offices. The greater efficiencies realized by having operations under one roof allows JBSS an increased speed to market, giving the firm more flexibility to respond to market demands and consumer preferences.

The Elgin campus also includes state-of-the-art proprietary nut processing equipment. Cold storage units are strategically positioned to keep nuts fresh and extraordinary care was taken to set up processing and packaging operations to effectively separate tree nuts from peanuts which enhance already stringent allergen containment processes.

In addition to the Elgin campus, JBSS has facilities close to nut fields in California, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas.

JBSS began as a pecan shelling company in Chicago in 1922 and has grown into an in-house sheller, processor, packager, marketer and distributor of shelled and in-shell nuts which are sold under a variety of private brands and under the companys Fisher®, Evons, Flavor Tree, Sunshine Country® and Texas Pride brand names.

The company also markets and distributes and in most cases, manufactures and processes a diverse product line of food and snack items including nut mixes, peanut butter, candy, natural snacks, extruded snacks, corn snacks and sesame sticks.
