US Mint offers this impressive 2016 1 oz. Proof Platinum American Eagle for $1,350.00. It's sold in an exclusive, custom-designed presentation case that allows the 2015 and 2016 Proof Platinum Eagles to be displayed together. The 2016 issue is also limited to 1 coin per household.
This outstanding coin is manufactured at the West Point facility of the US Mint, being made of .9995 pure platinum, with a face value of $100. The Platinum Proof American Eagles are struck for five times, using vertically oriented dies, with the obverse upper hammer and reverse lower die, to obtain their unique mirror-like finish.
The obverse side of the coin features the "Portrait of Liberty" concept - a modern representation of the Statue of Liberty as trustfully looking to the future. The image is encircled by the inscriptions "Liberty", "E Pluribus Unum", "In God We Trust" and the mintage year. The design belongs to the remarkable US Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti and it's used for bullion, uncirculated and proof American Platinum Eagle Coins since their introduction in 1997.
Each year, the reverse design of Proof Platinum Eagles is changed. The 2016 1 oz. Proof Platinum American Eagle depicts an innovative, yet incredibly beautiful reverse design created by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Joseph Menna, representing the core values of the Nation: Liberty and Freedom. The image showcases the Lady Liberty holding an olive branch in her left hand (symbol of peace) and the torch of enlightenment in her right hand (symbol of hope), as well as the majestic bald eagle beside her with its widely outstretched wings. Also, on the olive branch are engraved 13 olives that represent the Thirteen Original Colonies of the American Nation. The reverse side contains the coin's face value, weight and purity marks and the words "United States of America".
The reverse design of the previous, 2015 coin depicted the "Liberty Nurtures Freedom" - Lady Liberty approaching a majestic bald eagle - courtesy of the designer Joel Iskowitz and sculptor Phebe Hemphill.
