The disease is characterized by blockage and/or inflammation of hair follicles and their accompanying sebaceous gland. Acne develops in regions of high sebaceous gland. The disease is seen to occur mostly in adolescence. At puberty androgens due to the increase in sebum production from enlarged sebaceous glands, the glands become blocked. Propionibacterium acnes further colonise and lead to lesion production although its exact role is unclear.
