Life-changing Event to Help People Find Living Kidney Donors

By: PRLog
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - June 5, 2018 - PRLog -- Two sessions of a living kidney donor workshop are being offered for free on Wednesday, June 6th at the Jacksonville Urban League on 903 West Union Street.

The Living Kidney Donor Network interactive workshop is led by living kidney donors and recipients to help people with kidney disease find living kidney donors.

Most individuals don't understand that there is no cure for chronic kidney disease. When the kidneys fail a person must have dialysis or a transplant in order to live. The latest data from the United States Renal Data System (12/31/15) shows that 703,243 Americans have kidney failure and 87.3% are on in-center hemodialysis. In-center hemodialysis sessions are typically 3 days a week, 4 hours at a time and needed for the rest of life.

The latest numbers from the Florida ESRD Network 7 show that 8,405 people developed kidney failure in 2016 and now 30,504 Florida residents have kidney failure. 87.6% of these individuals are dialysis patients receiving in-center treatment at a dialysis facility.

Many dialysis patients will tell you that they'd love to have a kidney transplant, but there is a shortage of organs and a long wait.4,720 Floridians are currently on the transplant waitlist. The average wait time is 3-5 years, and in some cases up to 10 years. The Living Kidney Donor Network interactive workshop is designed to help people with kidney disease skip the deceased donor waitlist by looking for living kidney donors.

DCI has partnered with the Living Kidney Donors Network and the Jacksonville Urban League to host two sessions of a FREE living kidney donor workshop. The goal is for attendees to leave with a plan to begin looking for a living kidney donor.

The workshop is held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at two separate times, either: 9:00 – 11:30 AM    or    12:00 - 2:30 PM

The meeting will be held at the Jacksonville Urban League on 903 West Union Street in Jacksonville, FL 32204.

Class size is limited to 25 – 30. Individuals who want to attend should call Harvey Mysel at 312-473-3772 or email harvey@LKDN.org.
