Michael Coppola, a security solutions expert, was recently featured in a blog on how to keep criminal justice information secure in a world where constant online threats are the norm.
(PRUnderground) November 19th, 2020
In the blog, the Coppola explains that when people access criminal justice data from tablets, laptops, or smartphones, stringent security features are needed. One of these is advanced authentication, also known as AA. According to Coppola, achieving competent security levels years ago involved using the combination of a username and password. However, more is needed today, and that is where AA comes in.
AA works by using something that a person knows and something that a person has, along with additional factors, to make sure that information remains secure. “Something that a person knows” refers to the password that he or she has memorized. Meanwhile, “something that a person has” refers to the device that the person must be in close proximity to in order to access the information he or she is seeking online.
Coppola also uses the blog to call attention to the importance of complex passwords. In the blog, he emphasizes the fact that people can easily hack passwords if they are created with little thought. For instance, a password such as “qwerty” or “abc123” can easily be hacked. However, with the help of a security expert, online users can develop passwords that will be less likely to be compromised.
In the blog, readers can furthermore learn about the differences between AA and two-factor authentication. According to Michael Coppola, the latter requires people to log on using their names, passwords, personal identification numbers, and secondary passcodes to be used on time each. However, AA involves calculating multiple factors to determine if a user can gain access to information online. All in all, Coppola’s main goal with the blog is to encourage readers to be more cognizant of the steps required to secure criminal justice and other information online in the modern world.
