Massachusetts, Dec 10, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Visual artist and sculptor, Joaquin Restrepo is set to launch his new work, Yeyamá Akuará at the Boston Fashion Awards 2020 on December 13. Through his art pieces and illustrations, he confronts racial and gender discrimination. His themes also address the ongoing global pandemic and events that have been recurring in American over this year.

The illustration which incorporates the artist's style with various religious, cultural, and social elements, shows the assumption of the African goddess Akuara, representing Saint Sebastian. He uses Saint Sebastian, patron saint of pandemics, and an open symbol of the LGBT+ community, to intercede for protection. The saint is characterized by the African goddess of fertility and denotes hope to the millions of lives that have been lost. It is also a representation and message of empowerment to minorities, who have been victims of abuses and brutalities during 2020.

The illustration is composed of the Pan-African colors (red, green, yellow, and black) symbolizing life and color recalling the Liberation movement which is currently relived not only from the social and political sphere of the country but also as mentioned by the artist, from the interior of each one. He says, "Perhaps it is the right time to learn that true freedom is within us, right after we have defeated our own demons". The project began in April with fashion designer Isabel López, who was awarded the Fashion Achievement award and nominated for Designer: Coutre/Formal at the Boston Fashion Awards 2020, an event in which the illustration will also be present on December 13.

Yeyamá Akuará was born after the Amor Fati exhibition that invites guests to face their fears and get to know themselves from within. It was launched during the first half of the year through the LCMA museum in Florida, and the Hispanic Heritage Committee of Orange County, and in the same way; the exhibition was presented in Switzerland, Colombia, and Mexico

Joaquin Restrepo is also participating in the RED exhibition, with his sculptures, Adam and Eve. The pieces are made of bronze and iron oxide, the event is curated by Elodie Richard, and organized by the Jane's Art Center in New Smyrna, Florida, takes place during December and shows from different artistic perspectives the starring role of red in art. Through the centuries, it has conjured emotions such as love, and lust, and rage, and served as a symbol for wealth, war, revolution, and religious sacrifice.
