AZ MLK Celebration Committee Mobilizes Public-Private Partnerships to Distribute Holiday Food Boxes to Area Residents
Phoenix, Dec 30, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Over 150 meal boxes were distributed to families in need within the Roosevelt School District No. 66 thanks to public and private donations. The event was planned as a day of service to leverage the strength of local citizens and the business community to help tackle local problems and advance Dr. King's dream of opportunity for all.
Valley organizations and volunteers stepped up to serve food-insecure families in the Phoenix area on Saturday, December 19, 2020, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. The event was the first Holiday Food Box distribution spearheaded by the AZ MLK Celebration Committee in partnership with the Arizona Opportunities and Industrialization Center and included donations from the Phoenix (AZ) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Lexus of Chandler, HeroZonaFoundation, Costco and several other private donations. The event took place at the AZ OIC facility in Phoenix, AZ. Volunteers assisted in the aid of hunger relief by donating turkeys, organizing food boxes, and distributing food boxes to families in need. "On this day we answered Dr. King's call to serve and made a difference in the lives of Phoenix residents," said Monica Tipton, the Chairperson of Community Days of Service, AZ MLK Celebration Committee. "A resourceful way to meet local needs, volunteer service is a powerful tool that builds strong communities. We are putting the core American principles of citizenship and service into action." The event honored Dr. King's legacy and was an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others and engage in conversations to advance community goals. As Dr. King said, "Everyone can be great because everybody can serve."
