AchieveNEXT, a leading provider of Peer Advisory Networks and Solutions for emerging and mid-market leaders and their enterprises, has released the results of its study of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within the Professional Sports Industry.
From November 2020 through January 2021, AchieveNEXT invited C-Suite executives, HR leaders, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion champions from more than 175 professional sports teams from across North America to participate in its study. Respondents represented teams from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and affiliates. Qualified representatives from dozens of teams across each of the professional leagues participated in the survey with a goal of benchmarking maturity, priority and understanding of the impact of DE&I issues on the employee experience in their enterprises and as an industry.
"Sports enterprises regularly demonstrate an external commitment to social justice and DE&I through their public activities," said Robyn Pollack, Managing Director of AchieveNEXT's DE&I Practice. "But our survey revealed that teams pay far less attention to these issues inside their enterprises."
Pollack co-authored the report with AchieveNEXT's Chief Knowledge Officer, Thomas A. Stewart, and Shelton Goode, Ph.D., CEO and President of Icarus Consulting.
The report outlines a three-step process for advancing DE&I initiatives, beginning with an assessment of the current state, followed by analysis and creation of a strategic roadmap that takes into consideration talent acquisition, talent development, leadership development, and succession planning.
"By understanding their current level, leagues and enterprise leaders can set more defined and financially focused strategies that will link investments in DE&I to their business strategy," Pollack said. "When this happens, DE&I can become a driver of shareholder value as well as an expression of values."
