Born in Girona (Catalonia), Dr. Bernus first came to the United States at age 16 as a high school exchange student. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in molecular and cell biology. She began medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara under the Fifth Pathway Program, completing her medical degree at the New York Medical College in 2001. She then completed her residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles in 2004, and her fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Colorado Denver in 2007, where she remained as an instructor in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Her clinical interest during the fellowship was in pulmonary hypertension.
In 2007, Dr. Bernus moved back to California to join the staff at Loma Linda University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Her work focuses on pulmonary hypertension from the newborn to the adult congenital patient. She is also involved in non-invasive cardiology, echocardiography, and CICU/postoperative care.
A member of Heart Care International and Surgeon's of Hope, she has done several missions to Africa, Central and South America providing cardiac care to children. She moved to the Tampa Bay area in the summer of 2009 when she joined Pediatric Cardiology Associates.
Passionate about her profession, Dr. Bernus is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP).
