The Pandemic Has Left Death and Destruction in Its Wake - Including Careers

When the economy reopens, will you be ready?

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / February 25, 2021 / Over the last year, the vast majority of America's workforce lost their jobs, had hours reduced, or had their positions altered. It hasn't been easy. Nearly three-quarters of workers in the U.S. report that the COVID-19 fallout has been the most stressful time of their careers. Truthfully, some businesses will never fully recover, and employees will become collateral damage. So now what?

Career strategy expert and the founder and host of the Mind Your Own Business podcast, Elizabeth Upton, says to be open to pivot. "It's crucial to reframe your thoughts. If the pandemic has forced a change to your career destiny? Embrace it, and use the opportunity to explore something new." The former entertainment business executive says it's easy to get distracted and wallow in self-pity, but that your best use of energy is spent reimagining your goals. More free time? More meaningful work? More money? "Once you prioritize your wants and needs," says Upton, "a path will be revealed."

As far as getting back in the groove, Upton says to start the day focusing on one to three important tasks you need to accomplish. She suggests avoiding getting bogged down in little things that can feed procrastination. Stay focused on each task until it's complete; multi-tasking does not serve you here. Leverage the time of day when you feel your best and block that time off for your most challenging tasks. Finally, don't work in a vacuum. Invest in a coach or enlist someone who knows more than you do as a sounding board.

Upton suggests, "If you first prioritize being effective and then look through the lens of being efficient, you'll save time and achieve maximum productivity."
