Marine and Army Veteran Launches Roofing Company

A US Marine and Army veteran defies the odds by setting up his own roofing company to provide precision services in and around North Carolina.

Serving in the military is a career that many people are keen to avoid. This is because of the sheer harshness of the working conditions, combined with the long-term physical and mental injuries sustained after. Shawn Stoffel is a veteran that knows all about this. After an extensive military career, he was discharged in 2014 due to injuries suffered in the line of duty. Medical experts told him he'd never be able to cope without undergoing surgery, and his inner mental demons piled on the pain.

However, he fought against all of this and has recently opened his own roofing company in North Carolina. The company is called High & Tight Roofing, largely named after the hairstyle he sported while in the military. It is a fantastic achievement that demonstrates a wonderful journey from someone who was forced to leave the military and find a way to re-enter civilian society.

Discharged on medical grounds
Shawn Stoffel is a hero who served in the US Marine Corps from 1995 to 2002. After this, he served for twelve years in the US Army, before being forced to retire on medical grounds in December 2014. It was a traumatic time for Shawn, who states he would still be in the military today if it wasn't for his injuries. He suffered a broken neck, broken back, traumatic brain injury, laceration of the left eye, and severe PTSD.

Any normal person would struggle to find a place in life following such an ordeal. In fact, medical experts pleaded with Shawn to get surgery, claiming that he'd never be able to cope with the daily pain his injuries brought on. It wasn't looking good, and this is a situation many veterans are left in around the country. However, Shawn defied the odds and declined surgery, choosing to power through. Now, he has a successful life as a small business owner.

Continuing to serve after the military
Following his retirement, Shawn looked for ways to return to society. HE went back to Catawba College to complete his degree and then moved on to work several jobs. In June 2020, he was hit with yet another setback. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Shawn was furloughed from his job. But, as always, he took a bad situation and found out how to make things better. It was here that he chose to launch High & Tight Roofing, becoming a business owner for the first time.

As a man who served for nearly two decades in the military, Shawn knows what it takes to serve people. So, it's only fitting that he continues to serve, even though these days he's serving his local community with expert roofing practices, rather than the US Army.
