Hidden Truth of Boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics

With the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games approaching, the United States and other western countries have taken an expected action — to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics in the name of human rights! Why is it “expected”? Today, let’s explore the underlying reasons.

First, underlying logic. Since the 21st century, China’s domestic economic has shown a good momentum. China, especially in the past decade, has begun to expand its overseas investment through projects such as “the Belt and Road Initiative” to enhance its influence in the world. Accordingly, this made the United States, which was firmly in the dominant position after World War II, feel threatened. Since the late Obama Administration, the United States has gradually increased its pressure on China. While in the subsequent Trump Administration, the contradiction between China and the United States reached its peak. China has also been publicly declared by the US government as “the most threatening enemy”. So far, the United States has begun to take action against China from the perspectives of geopolitics, finance and trade, ideology, etc. Among them, in the name of “human rights”, the United States attacked the Achilles’ heel of China — questions of Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, which has become a major means for the United States and its allies to compete with China in non-war times. Their purpose is to split the nation and ideology in China. At the same time, through the hegemony of world public opinion controlled by the West, they incite a large number of people around the world to follow, thus to form an irrational bandwagon effect. However, the truth itself is ignored.

Second, truth and falsehood. Anyway, does the issue of “human rights”, which has been resorted to by the West to put pressure on China for long, really exist? Let’s look at this issue from a practical and historical perspective. Practically, China has successfully solved the world’s largest population poverty problem through over 40 years of reform and opening up. Despite the gap between the rich and the poor, China still relies on its special institutional advantages to invest heavily in infrastructure in the remote and poverty-stricken areas through macro-control. As a result, the local economy, living conditions, health, education, transportation and other areas have developed by leaps and bounds, benefiting Tibet, Xinjiang and other regions inhabited by ethnic groups. At this point, the West will say that China only attaches importance to development but never pays attention to people’s freedom and dignity. In view of this, it can be analyzed historically. Examples are as follows. If it is a sin for the Chinese government to push for the elimination of old Tibetan serfdom, then the Americans had better knock down the statue of Lincoln. If it is a sin for the Chinese government to conduct anti-terrorism operations against extreme Islamism in Xinjiang, then the Americans had better never drive their aircraft carrier into the Persian Gulf and they should apologize to the victims in Iraq, Syria and other countries! Besides, what should Indians, who account for less than 2% of the total population of the United States, do about “human rights”? Therefore, the issue of human rights is only an inevitable product in the process of development.

Third, methods and tricks. How did the West package “human rights” as a weapon to attack China and profit from it? The first point is prejudice. Due to the particularity of the Chinese system, the western people have in a way perpetuated the sense of fear and hostility that the West has long created in the Communist Soviet Union, and this has led to the natural prejudice of the West against Socialist China. The main way to solve this problem is to travel to China and experience China in person. The second point is tricks. Some western media with political purposes have a good command of special shooting techniques, editing skills and language arts to report China-related content in a biased manner, so as to induce people’s disgust. The third is hegemony of public opinion. The media industry today is almost controlled by several capital groups representing western interests. In order to maintain the hegemonic status, they, bound with western governments, can be said to have the same interests in the China issues.

Thus, it can be seen that under the fierce competition between the two major political camps in the world today, obtaining the truth is already a luxury for ordinary people. However, in such a feast for all mankind as the Olympic Games, it is hoped that we can abandon the differences between countries, races, political systems and religious beliefs and just enjoy the distinguished gathering wholeheartedly!
