San Francisco, CA – On March 25rd, THE OBSIDIAN – a consortium of Black tech, media and academic professionals – announced the launch of their second annual OBSIDIAN Awards. Dubbed “The Rock,” the crowd-sourced award is a national celebration of excellence in the arts and in leadership.
“We wanted to create an awards program that would celebrate the things *we* love: innovation and leadership from progressive Black folk and our allies,” said Ron Cadet, Chief Editor at THE OBSIDIAN. “Innovation and leadership that can and should be celebrated by all Americans but is often overlooked. We also wanted to make sure that people feel like they have a role in calling out their favorite innovators and leaders, so our awards are voted on directly by the people.”
Voters select their favorites in six distinct categories: Best Movie, Best TV Show, Best Music Album, Best Podcast, Best Book, and Person of the Year.
“We’re out to shine more light on innovators like Dave Chappelle, Jemele Hill, and Nikole Hannah Jones. We’re the antidote to the noise that typically gets promoted in media like Fox News,” Russell Gatewood, Chief Curator at THE OBSIDIAN.
Voting on the Innovators and Leaders THE OBSIDIAN seeks to illuminate is open to the public right now and closes on April 6th. Winners will be announced at the end of April.
