Following the successful Twitter Spaces AMA with Binance on August 31st, MetaBlox thanks all community members who joined the discussion. During the discussion, Filip, the community manager of MetaBlox lively and eloquently described the big picture of MetaBlox and features of its NFT. For those who missed it, below is a recap drawn from the conversation. Or listen to a full recording of the AMA.
Host: Can you introduce yourself and the team?
Filip: Sure, hi everyone, I’m Filip and I’m the community manager for MetaBlox. Since learning about blockchain tech in 2017 I’ve gained lots of experience engaging different crypto communities as both a member and manager.
The MetaBlox team is led by industry leaders in telco, fintech, and blockchain applications. It also has some top notch advisors who’ve worked on other crypto projects.
Host: What does MetaBlox do? What is its vision or mission?
Filip: We all know Web3 is coming. The wireless networking landscape is changing from a platform-centric one to a user centric one. However, it remains unclear how to make this transition.
For a user centric network, users themselves need to be able to define who they are, and how and what to share with other people.
After four years of hard work, the MetaBlox team has come out with a passpoint protocol which does this–utilizing DIDs and VC protocol to enable a decentralized foundation layer to support the build-out of a user centric network. This protocol provides key infrastructure for a Web3 native, user centric network that can be used to support new Web3 applications.
MetaBlox’s network is also an Open Roaming network that allows users to seamlessly move between hotspots without logging in repeatedly. You only need to login once with a DID to roam freely between hotspots. The wifi routers forming this network are also miners that earn crypto for their owners.
Host: What’s special about the MetaBlox NFT?
Filip: It’s special because it’s the first ever miner-pegged NFT! Each NFT is connected to a physical MetaBlox miner in a particular location. The miners are operated by MetaBlox, and produce ongoing crypto rewards for the NFT holders.
The MetaBlox miners pegged to the NFTs are also installed in high traffic locations that miners in private areas don’t have access to. These are locations like tourist attractions, hospitals, and other busy public areas. The higher the traffic, the more tokens the miners issue, so MetaBlox miners will issue more crypto than the ones in private spaces.
Besides cloud mining, the NFT has other utilities that create ongoing rewards for holders. For instance the NFT has a staking utility, and it is also proof of holders’ VIP membership in the MetaBlox community. We call these people ‘OG’ members. This special status gives holders benefits like access to events, airdrops, boosted mining incomes, and stronger community governance voting rights.
It pre-launched on BinanceNFT on August 24th at a discounted price, and it will officially launch on OpenSea on September 6th. We call this collection the MetaBlox Genesis NFT since it’s the first and most lucrative generation of them, but MetaBlox plans to launch more in the future.
Host: What is NFT Staking?
Filip: The NFT can be staked to earn more crypto. A staking pool opens on September 12, and holders will be able to deposit their NFT into it for daily $MBLX token rewards. And the NFT has flexible staking, so holders can withdraw their NFT from the staking pool at any time while keeping all tokens earned from each staking day. The staking pool closes on December 12th, when all tokens earned from staking since September will become available.
Host: What is the roadmap for the NFT?
Filip: MetaBlox announced its NFT during its presentation at NFT NYC in June. The NFT had a very successful pre-launch on BinanceNFT on August 24th, and another one thousand units will launch on OpenSea on September 6th. The pegged miners will come online December 12th, 2022, after the NFT staking pool closes.
Closing thoughts
Without a doubt, the internet has reshaped how we live our lives. From having the world’s information at our fingertips to social networking and shopping online, just about everything we do has been affected by the internet. But this increased convenience has also come at a cost. Our private information is now susceptible to being compromised by criminals and bad actors around the world. From the AMA between Binance and MetaBlox, there was a clear message that MetaBlox was focus on building a free, secure, Open Roaming and decentralized wireless hotspot network native to Web3. Since large multinational corporations control and exploit the flow of information for their own gain. We live with this steep tradeoff between privacy and convenience because of the benefits. That is where Web3 and MetaBlox come into the picture.
