Helping South African Learners “Read For Meaning”

A recent program started by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers is enabling learners to be able to Read for a Meaning.

Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa - June 1, 2023

A recent program started by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers is enabling learners to be able to Read for a Meaning. Applied in three Early Childhood Development (ECDs) offices so far over the past few months, learners previously seemingly “disinterested” in their study are now completely revived, craving to learn more. And as a side effect, their teachers, some who had quit teaching because they felt they were not helping their learners, are also rehabilitated. Seeing how the learners come back day after day on their own determinism, they consider this new Read Aloud Program is the best answer.

Backing up the President’s campaign of “Reading for Meaning”, the relentless Volunteer Ministers have done it again. Equipped with practical solutions to life’s problems, they started the Read Aloud program, which consists in getting the learner to read aloud a text which he did not understand and getting him to clear up any words he does not understand in a proper dictionary.

“It sounds simple and almost unbelievable. But it works and it literally changes life right in front of our eyes!”, said Boitumelo Maswanganye.

From his side, Sandile Hlayisi, Chairperson of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers says, “Think about it. If I ask you to draw a house, you will be able do it. If I ask you to draw a dog, you will be able to do it. What if I ask you to draw a “felis domesticus”. Can you draw that? Most likely not. Now what if I clear this word with you and you learn it means a “domesticated cat”, will you be able to draw that? Surely yes. That is what the program does.” He adds that if there would now be a whole year of teaching about felis domesticus, the learner could succeed, while before, they may not attend the class the whole year.

According to Maswanganye, the wide-open bright eyes of the learners and their smiles say it all. “And they are even having fun at it!” she added.

Inspired by the 19 Tools for Life courses from L. Ron Hubbard that she had done at the Castle Kyalami, Maswanganye decided to put to task what she had learned. Of all the courses she did, she picked the Technology of Study to help learners. “As the learners come and come again, we can see a visible improvement in their reading, their confidence and even their behavior,” she said. “There is no word to describe how rewarding it is to do this.”

She wants to assist learners that are struggling. “I want to help as many as I can as now that I have the right tool to assist,” Maswanganye concluded.

“We too take pleasure at seeing learners improving and being able to “Read for Meaning”, said Hlayisi. “It not only makes learners happy and able, but the ripple effects it has in their family who do notice the difference, with their educators and the fact that some have said that they no longer need drugs and quit is very satisfactory for us.” He is convinced this Read Along program will have a profound effect throughout the community.
