Marquis Who's Who Honors Christopher Maylahn, DrPH, for Excellence in Public Health

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / April 2, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who honors Christopher Maylahn, DrPH, for his excellence in public health. Dr. Maylahn has dedicated 45 years to the field and has officially retired from the New York State Department of Health. He steps away from his role as a program research specialist after a career marked by significant contributions in epidemiology, chronic disease tracking and public health partnerships across New York.

About Dr. Christopher Maylahn, DrPH
Education began as the foundation for Dr. Maylahn's decades-long career. He holds several advanced degrees, including a Doctor of Public Health from the University at Albany and a Master of Public Health from Yale University School of Medicine. After more than 45 years in the field, his main area of interest is in epidemiology, program evaluation and health surveillance. He is known as a committed mentor and a strong supporter of organizations that focus on vision health.

Dr. Maylahn followed a path into public service that was influenced by his family's medical background. He was especially inspired by his grandfather, who was a respected pediatrician. He began his career with the Vermont Heart Association before joining the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) in 1980, where he held multiple positions before retiring in 2023. He was instrumental in launching and managing new program areas, and in his last role, he managed bureau program areas and worked closely with the commissioner's office during the COVID-19 pandemic. His expertise was essential in making certain the data were accurate during a time of uncertainty.

One of Dr. Maylahn's proudest accomplishments involved the research he did for his doctoral dissertation, which explored how to sustain partnerships between hospitals and local health departments. His work demanded a blending of his academic knowledge and real-world experience as he aimed to improve New York's public health infrastructure. His findings shed light on how community work and funding can create strong, lasting connections between these two vital parts of the local public health scene.

Throughout his time in the field, Dr. Maylahn received recognition from respected organizations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), where he remains a member. He also previously served as president and chair of the Science and Epidemiology Committee for the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors.

A Commitment to Helping Others
Outside of work, Dr. Maylahn is actively involved in groups that help people with visual impairments, a cause that's close to his heart because his grandfather struggled with macular degeneration. He is also passionate about mentoring and views it as an important way to share knowledge and experience in public health. His advice to newcomers in his field is to see public health as "not a short trip but a long journey," and to be ready for the inevitable challenges they will face.

In his retirement, Dr. Maylahn plans to continue his volunteer efforts in eye health and other public health partners he worked with during his career. He also intends to stay active through hobbies like exercising, swimming and working with stones, a pastime that connects him to his maternal great-grandfather, who engineered the stone crib dam that formed Lake Naomi in Pennsylvania back in 2002. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Maylahn credits his success to seizing opportunities, learning from inspiring leaders and staying engaged in the practice of public health.
