Australia is experiencing a productivity crisis, as evidenced by headlines referring to a recent report released by Australia’s Productivity Commission. The Commission’s report titled “Advancing Prosperity” made 71 recommendations to help improve the continent’s low productivity growth. The Commission pointed out that the country’s productivity has hit its slowest rate since the 1970s. It feared that if the federal government did nothing, the low productivity could curtail Australia’s long-term prosperity.
The Commission recommends improving tax and migration systems to entice more skilled workers to migrate to Australia to increase productivity. The Commission also called on the federal government to remove import tariffs to boost the economy.
But before the Productivity Commission’s report, one Australian law firm — spearheaded by Migration Lawyer Traci Yan Yan Chen — had already made it their mission to address the growing migration needs of the Land Down Under.
An Overview of Australia’s Migrant Statistics
Canada and Australia’s current migration policies are not that different. Both have quite a rigorous migration application process that involves a points-based system where points are awarded to applicants based on several criteria, such as age, education, work experience, and language skills. Potential migrants also need to choose the right type of visa to apply for depending on their eligibility.
Despite Australia’s comprehensive migration policy, many eligible migrants have managed to move to the country successfully. The number of migrants in Australia has grown to about 30% of the entire population, but Australia still needs more newcomers. This is mainly due to the low birth rate among Australian citizens. On average, a typical Australian woman is having only two children in her lifetime. This has been a fact since the 1970s, making the replacement of its citizens without migration impossible. Australia’s population only continues to increase because they have welcomed more and more migrants to their shores.
Using the Power of Social Media to Ramp up Australian Migration
Maison Chen Law Group founder Traci Yan Yan Chen started her firm to help fulfill the growing demand for migrants in Australia. But her quest to help migrants achieve their Great Australian Dream started earlier than that.
Chen was first exposed to the migration woes of Australia when she was young. Her family experienced their own journey — in which they had to navigate the complex legal processes — when they came to Australia from China. Having migration in her blood, fueled Chen’s natural progression to consider how she could help migrant hopefuls.
“There are a lot of migrants being targeted and scammed,” said Chen. “People are being told to pay a certain amount to get a visa. They pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for permanent residency. But that’s just not how it works.”
Faced with this reality, Chen knew she had to do something to help fellow migrants. Chen’s first step was to learn everything she could about the country’s migration system and policies. So she deliberately chose to take on more migration clients in the law firms where she worked.
Unfortunately, her blossoming career was cut short when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and she was let go. Despite the setback, Chen didn’t slow down one bit. She had a mission in mind, so she diligently worked part-time while researching what else she could do to help migrant hopefuls.
“Since I was only working part-time after being laid off, I had a lot of free time,” said Chen. “And that’s when I jumped on social media and talked about migration. There’s so much uncertainty around migration in Australia — especially with closed borders. Everybody was just so anxious, and there was no transparency from the government at that time.”
After discussing migration policies online, Chen found herself being interviewed by several television channels. So she decided to leave and strike out on her own.
“It was a huge leap of faith for me. But I knew it was the right thing to do,” said Chen. “So I started building my own systems to get all the leads in and receive queries about immigration. I have received about 50,000 queries since I started doing this.”
Maison Chen Law Group grew exponentially despite operating in the middle of the pandemic. Chen shared that it even came to the point that they couldn’t hire fast enough — while other firms were shutting down. In a short span of 18 months, the firm has grown to a strong team of 30.
“Social media is a respected channel now, especially for younger generations,” said Chen. “Many still think it is a joke. But social media makes accessing valuable information such as migration policies more approachable, understandable, and usable. And that’s what we do.”
The Future of Australian Immigration
“In the last seven years, we’ve seen thousands and thousands of visa invitations in Australia,” said Chen. “This is a first in the entire history of the country. In fact, in the last invitation round, they invited up to 35,000 migrants.”
According to Traci, the demand for more labor in Australia is not waning. The country still needs up to a million more people to keep up with the workload and skill shortage. And through her social media accounts and her law firm at Maison Chen Law Group, Traci Yan Yan Chen is helping more people fulfill their Great Australian Dream.
