What Happened?

Shares of health coverage company Centene (NYSE: CNC) fell 5.1% in the morning session after a significant decline in membership appeared to overshadow an otherwise strong second-quarter earnings report where the company beat expectations and raised its full-year profit forecast. Centene's adjusted earnings per share of $2.51 and revenue of $53.58 billion both significantly surpassed analyst estimates.

The health insurer also increased its full-year adjusted profit guidance to $4.80 per share at the midpoint, a substantial increase from its previous forecast. However, these strong financial results were overshadowed by a notable drop in the company's total membership, which fell to approximately 25.9 million. This represented a year-over-year decline of over 2.1 million members, seemingly worrying investors about the company's future growth and outweighing the positive quarterly performance.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $62.13, down 3% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Centene’s shares are quite volatile and have had 18 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock gained 14.6% on the news that the company reported first-quarter 2026 results that surpassed analyst expectations and raised its full-year financial guidance. The managed care company announced adjusted earnings per share of $3.37, significantly beating analyst estimates of $2.13.

Total revenues for the quarter also topped forecasts, coming in at $49.94 billion. Following the strong performance, Centene boosted its outlook for the full year, increasing its adjusted earnings per share guidance by 13.3% to $3.40 at the midpoint. Additionally, the company lifted its full-year total revenue forecast by $1 billion to approximately $189.5 billion, signaling confidence in its business momentum.

Centene is up 48.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $62.13 per share, it is still trading 9.6% below its 52-week high of $68.72 from July 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Centene’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $891.24.
