National Office Furniture Facility Certified to VPP STAR Status for Safety Practices; Indiana Department of Labor Honors Employees’ Achievement

Three hundred employees of National Office Furniture joined an exclusive group recently when their company’s Jasper facility achieved the prestigious “STAR” certification under the Federal OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). The VPP STAR recognizes those employers with superior occupational safety and health management systems. In Indiana, the VPP is administered under the Department of Labor.

“We rely upon our VPP companies, the innovators, the ones that go far beyond everyone else and that mentor others,” said Indiana’s Commissioner of Labor, Lori Torres, who presented the award and a special VPP flag during a ceremony to recognize the newly certified National Office Furniture 11th Avenue seating production facility in Jasper, Indiana. “Because of what you guys are doing here at National Office Furniture, there are going to be hundreds, thousands really, of other employees that are safer and better off, and can go home and continue to work.”

The National Office Furniture manufacturing facility employs more than 300 full-time employees and produces over 1,000 office chairs daily. Commissioner Torres reminded the assembled employees that her visit was not “just a symbolic trip to hand out a plaque”, but rather a true recognition of their company’s notable accomplishment.

“National Office Furniture has achieved this goal and did it without additional governmental regulation,” Torres said. “And they did it in a way that is unique to their business’ needs.”

Although Indiana has approximately 140,000 employer companies in the state, only 56 of those companies are certified as VPP STAR sites. Nationwide, fewer than 2,500 companies have achieved the coveted STAR status under this program since 1982. Sites selected to receive VPP STAR status have demonstrated commitment to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards. VPP companies have implemented systems to identify and control occupational hazards and to prevent employee injuries or illnesses. Achieving this recognition underscores the importance National Office Furniture places on employees and their safety on the job, where management commitment and employee participation are key to achieving results like VPP certification.
