MODESTO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / May 10, 2021 / As a child, Mike Glad collected stamps and assembled a massive collection consisting of samples from all over the world. Mike Glad is an Oscar-nominated film producer who lives and works in Modesto, CA. He has traveled the world researching and photographing the lives of natives peoples. This, of course, is another form of collecting which has brought him great satisfaction. Today, Mike Glad is bringing a massive collection of original Anime art to auction.
"Anime" is a style of animation developed and made popular by artists and producers in Japan. The most well-known anime productions include Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing, and the source material for Ghost in the Shell.
He began building his anime collection 33 years ago in 1988. He met the Hungarian animator John Halas who had curated a successful traveling art show known as the "Masters of Animation." The program was based on Halas' book of the same name. Mike Glad asked Halas for contact information on some of the principal animators whose work was featured in the program. To his great surprise and delight, Halas agreed.
Mike Glad proceeded to contact each animator asking for exemplary samples of their work. One of the first to reply was the famed Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka, known as the "father of Manga." Manga is perhaps the original form of Japanese Anime, with a less acutely science-fiction bent, but with many Japanese cultural artifacts and stylistic similarities to Anime.
Born in 1929, Tezuka was approaching the end of his life when he was contacted by Mike Glad. He sent two pieces from the seminal "Astro Boy" series as well as a "Phonix" print. These are foundational works of Manga art. They drew great interest and after Tezuka's death in 1989, Mike Glad was motivated to create a truly comprehensive catalog of manga and anime art.

Around this time Carl Macek, the creator of the Macross (Robotech) cartoon and book series, and Jerry Beck, a well-known animation historian in the U.S., formed a production company to create the wildly popular Akira series. Beck wanted to save samples of Akira cells on the office wall and reached out to the production company asking them to save some for posterity.
According to Mike Glad, this set the tone for collectors and historians to take a closer look at anime work. With these samples well preserved, the world could see some of the most mature and impressive anime art ever created at that time. Mike Glad commented, "Due to [Beck's] initiative, the office received all the cells, backgrounds and notes on Akira. Beck complained about moving heavy boxes in from the street. But when he opened them, he found some the wonderful pan backgrounds had been used as packing materials!"
