Marquis Who's Who Honors C. Adam Probst, PhD, MS, CPPS, for Expertise in Health Care

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / December 15, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors C. Adam Probst, PhD, MS, CPPS, for expertise in health care. Dr. Probst currently serves as director of applied human factors at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia. For the past 17 years, he has made significant contributions to improving health care delivery, patient safety and quality, and advancements in human factors engineering and the practical application of its science to health care.

An Early Loss Inspires Purpose

Dr. Probst was influenced to pursue health care after a car accident at age 14. The accident took his father's life and led to 17 surgeries for him. His father had been a primary care provider and that personal history continues to drive his commitment to improving patient care.

Inspired by his family's history and his own experiences, Dr. Probst pursued a career in health care. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in cognitive engineering and human factors, as well as a master's degree in the same field, from Wichita State University. He also holds a master's degree in health care leadership and management from The University of Texas at Dallas and a bachelor's degree in experimental psychology from Texas Tech University. He is accredited as a certified professional in patient safety through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Major Roles in Health System Innovations

Dr. Probst has worked in human factors engineering and patient safety for nearly two decades. His expertise centers on redesigning workflows and systems to reduce risks, improve efficiency and help health professionals provide quality care. He previously served as director of patient safety at OU Health in Oklahoma City and spent more than a decade in leadership roles at Baylor Scott & White Health in Texas.

Among Dr. Probst's most recognized achievements was a two-year project with a cardiac universal bed unit nurse manager. The effort saved 120 minutes per nurse per shift, raised nursing satisfaction scores by more than 70 percent and resulted in a published framework that has informed health care practices. The work also earned him a safety award and second place in Masimo's Innovation of the Year Award.

AI and Human Factors in Everyday Care

In discussing industry trends, Dr. Probst points to the increasing integration of artificial intelligence in health care and the need to redesign work systems to support clinicians. "How do we make AI fit within health care?" he says. "We're still learning how to do that, just like everybody." Additionally, he emphasizes that health care systems are beginning to focus on how technology can be better integrated into clinical workflows. The aim is to improve safety and efficiency without overburdening staff and proactively reducing their workload to prevent care rationing.

Dr. Probst has been active in projects with major health organizations. For instance, he has collaborated with the World Health Organization on a forthcoming guidebook that applies human factors thinking to health care systems worldwide. He has also joined efforts with MedStar Health in Washington, D.C., as a member of the Coalition for Advancing Safer Healthcare, where human factors specialists focus on using these approaches within the U.S. "I think health care is on the precipice of beginning to shift toward that direction because we have all the technology we can get. Now we have to integrate it to support our health care workers and improve safety and quality," he says.

A Vision for Systemwide Improvement

Outside of his professional role, Dr. Probst supports his church's local animal shelters, unhoused populations and youth and adult programs. He enjoys hunting and also supports his identical twin girls in their school and sports activities.

Dr. Probst sees a need for an overhaul of the health care model. "One of the things that I think people are finally starting to grasp is that the work system we created for health care is broken because we piecemealed it together," he says. Looking to the next phase of his career, he seeks to promote standardization in health care to improve safety and quality while protecting staff from the emotional strain caused by errors. As a result, he remains committed to advancing human factors engineering across health systems nationwide.
