Iowa Virtual Academy Students are Ready to Take Charge of Their Future

After two years of questions and distractions, the students of Iowa Virtual Academy IAVA, an online public school serving students throughout the state, are looking forward to getting on with their future.

IAVA will celebrate its graduates in-person with a commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 4th, beginning at 1 pm. In addition, a Facebook live stream will be offered for those interested in attending the ceremony virtually.

“We have a lot of students that struggle during normal times and the last two years took all their strength and effort to get it done,” said Head of School Steven Hoff. “We’re excited to see our students graduate and move on to all the amazing next steps in their careers and academic futures.”

Online students at IAVA have had quite the success. IAVA’s increased its graduation rate nearly 26% from 2019 to 2021. This year, IAVA will graduate approximately 60 students from all over the state. Collectively, the graduating class reports it has been accepted to colleges and universities across Iowa and beyond, including The University of Iowa, Iowa State, Upper Iowa, Nebraska Omaha, and a number of community colleges.

Some IAVA graduates are planning on entering the work field, pursuing careers as plumbers, farmers, or electricians, while others are entering the military fields. The ceremony’s keynote speaker will be Secretary of State, Paul Pate.

Prior to the pandemic, students enrolled in virtual school for a number of reasons—some were looking for the safe learning environment that online school provides, some were looking to get back on track to earn their high school diploma, and others found a community of students and teachers where they could belong for the rest of their academic career and beyond.

Iowa Virtual Academy students in grades K-12 access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects, a host of electives and attend live virtual classes taught by state-certified teachers.

IAVA is looking forward to celebrating its senior class and all that they have accomplished the past four years. Expect to see their class flower, a sunflower, present at the ceremony, including their class motto: “Cherish yesterday, live for today and reach for tomorrow.”

IAVA is inviting all families and friends worldwide to join the celebration. Details of the graduation ceremonies are as follows:
