Manatt Welcomes Former DOJ Antitrust Enforcer in Washington, D.C.

Dylan Carson’s extensive trial and courtroom experience in public and private antitrust enforcement further strengthens Manatt’s national antitrust practice

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, a multidisciplinary, integrated professional services firm, today announced that Litigation and Antitrust Partner Dylan Carson, a former antitrust trial attorney at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in the Antitrust Division, has joined the Firm in Washington, D.C. Carson, who most recently was retained by the California Attorney General’s Antitrust Section as outside trial counsel where he played a pivotal role in a major price-fixing enforcement action, adds to Manatt’s growing antitrust team.

“Dylan’s notable agency background and trial leadership skills make him a wonderful addition to our national antitrust bench, and his courtroom experience further aligns with our broader strategic growth across some of our core sectors, especially media, technology, real estate and health care,” said Donna L. Wilson, Manatt’s CEO and Managing Partner. “His arrival also reflects our continued commitment to expanding our footprint in our Washington, D.C. office, which is led by Partner Scott A. Schwartz and has seen exciting growth across our legal and consulting teams.”

At Manatt, Carson joins Partners Stephen D. (Steve) Libowsky and David H. Reichenberg as part of the Firm’s continued effort to strategically expand its antitrust capabilities to serve clients across the core industries that are seeing increased regulatory scrutiny. At the Antitrust Division, Carson was one of the key trial lawyers in courtroom challenges to two of the largest mergers in history, and is on the short list of antitrust attorneys to have successfully prosecuted and defended high-stakes merger trials. Carson brings extensive experience representing clients in antitrust and competition matters before federal and state antitrust enforcers—including the Antitrust Division, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and state attorneys general—including merger and conduct investigations and litigation. He also provides clients with strategic competition law counseling that minimizes risks associated with transactions among competitors and other third parties.

“I was drawn to Manatt’s stellar reputation, both inside and outside the courtroom, its collaborative culture and its dedication to client service, which is illustrated through its unique cross-industry, professional services model,” said Carson. “I’m excited to add to the formidable antitrust talents of Steve and David to provide innovative solutions and effective results for our clients across numerous industries.”

While at the Antitrust Division in the Media, Entertainment, and Communications Section, Carson received the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service, which is the second highest award for employee performance at the DOJ. He was also honored with the Assistant Attorney General Award of Distinction—the highest Antitrust Division performance award—three years in a row for his investigation and litigation efforts.

Carson is the latest addition to Manatt’s growing litigation and enforcement bench that works across the Firm’s core sectors, joining recent lateral hires Eric Gold, Joan A. Lukey, Marty F. Murphy, Paul H. Luehr, Fernando Villa, Bezalel (Bez) Stern and Sherli Furst. Other recent legal and business consulting arrivals include Thomas (Tom) Robertson, Wendy J. Greuel, Edo Banach, Julia E. Smith, Nicholas (Nick) Bath Jr., Shelli Silver, Cassie M. Prugh, Dr. Troyen (Troy) A. Brennan and Tracy A. Massel.

Carson received his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School and his B.A. in history from Vassar College. Before joining private practice, Carson clerked for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
