Heidi MacQuinn’s raw and heartfelt true story of overcoming extraordinary challenges offers hope to readers seeking strength, healing, and renewed purpose

MAINE — In a world where silent suffering can often go unseen, Heidi MacQuinn’s memoir Screaming in Silence brings an honest and deeply personal story of trauma, loss, perseverance, and the courageous decision to move forward. Now available on Amazon, the book follows MacQuinn’s life from a challenging infancy through decades of medical experiences, emotional hardship, difficult relationships, vision loss, and ultimately her transformation into a counselor and advocate.

Born in 1976 with hydrocephalus, MacQuinn underwent major surgeries as an infant and later participated in an experimental drug trial at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her childhood and adolescence brought a series of difficult medical experiences, isolation, unwanted attention, early physical changes, and periods of profound emotional distress.

During college, MacQuinn experienced a traumatic encounter that profoundly affected her life. Later, a shunt malfunction resulted in permanent significant vision loss. A deeply difficult relationship became another major chapter in her journey. Through these experiences, she continued pursuing her education, earning degrees including a bachelor’s degree in psychology, training in substance-use counseling, and eventually founding Proactive Peers to support people navigating recovery and isolation.

“I once heard someone say, ‘That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’ I don’t believe that,” MacQuinn writes. “I think that the pain of trauma makes you bitter and sad… Terrible things happen to good people. But it’s not about what happens to you; it’s about what you do next. Healing comes from acknowledgement of the event, acceptance of the situation, and forgiveness towards ourselves and those involved.”

The memoir approaches difficult subjects with honesty while keeping its focus on the human journey toward healing. Readers experience the uncertainty of childhood medical treatment, the emotional aftermath of traumatic experiences, the challenges associated with progressive vision loss, and the effects of a deeply unhealthy relationship. Ultimately, the narrative centers on personal agency: the journey from feeling powerless to recognizing inner strength, rebuilding self-respect, and reaching out to others who may feel isolated or overwhelmed.

Today, MacQuinn lives in Maine with her partner Jason and their cat Bella. She continues supporting people recovering from substance-use disorder and channels her experiences into Proactive Peers, a platform focused on restoring meaningful human connection and helping reduce the isolation that can accompany difficult periods in life.

Screaming in Silence is written for readers interested in personal-growth memoirs, stories of resilience following medical challenges, disability narratives, recovery journeys, and inspiring accounts of rebuilding hope after profound adversity. The ebook is available now on Amazon.
