Tampa, Florida – Tampa-based veterans law firm David W. Magann, P.A., which represents veterans in disability claims and appeals, is closely watching the bill as it advances. While the measure faces the same political and procedural hurdles as any major legislation, its structure offers renewed hope for proposals that previously lacked momentum.

Historically, fewer than ten percent of all bills introduced in Congress become law. Each year, bills focused on expanding and preserving veterans’ disability benefits are among those that fail. The Take Care of America’s Veterans Act is giving many of those bills a second chance.

H.R. 9237, the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, incorporates over 60 veterans’ bills into a single legislative package. By bundling these bills and focusing on their shared topic, legislators hope to move them forward more efficiently. 

Key pieces of legislation included in the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act include the Major Richard Star Act. This act allows many combat-injured veterans to receive both military retirement pay and VA disability compensation, even if they medically retired before reaching 20 years of service. A similar bill, the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act, would also expand benefits for Gold Star families.

The Love Lives On Act 2025 would allow widowed spouses of servicemembers to continue receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) benefits, even if they remarry before age 55. Currently, surviving spouses can only receive DIC benefits after remarriage if they are at least 55 years old when they remarry. This bill is also included in the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act.

The combined bill also includes expanded benefits for catastrophically disabled veterans, reforms for caregiver support, efforts to modernize the VA, and other provisions related to veterans’ care.

Both supporters and opponents of the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act agree that the bill expands and strengthens benefits for disabled veterans. They diverge, however, on how the costs of those benefits should be paid.
