(Matthew Du, NewsUSA Reporter) - Local Las Vegans refer to the flood channel network beneath the city, stretching until Lake Mead, as "the tunnels." The flood channels tend to be dry during the daytime and after the storm season. Because of this, over a thousand people have found shelter in the tunnels and avoid local authorities who shoo away those who sleep on the streets.

Authorities started clearing out the tunnels in November 2023 in preparation for the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, which first ran on November 16-18 of the same year. During the weeks leading up to the Formula race, the tunnels had a "clean out" to ensure that no individual was inhabiting the network during the races.
