What happened?

A number of stocks fell in the afternoon session after reports pointed to persistent traffic headwinds, sluggish sales growth, and mounting executive pessimism ahead of quarterly earnings. According to Morningstar, quick-service and fast-casual operators are still navigating a steep, industrywide consumer pullback, with budget-strained diners cutting visits even as chains invest in value, digital, and operations to defend unit economics. That backdrop is showing up in the numbers: Wingstop’s domestic same-store sales fell 7.5% in the second quarter, and Morningstar remains cautious that a narrow, highly competitive chicken category leaves little room for a fast rebound. The pressure broadened as Street targets were cut across the group — including Chipotle after soft October sales reads and Wingstop after multiple price-target reductions — reinforcing skepticism that promotional pricing alone can quickly restore transaction volumes. With Chipotle and Wingstop among the names set to report next week, investors are watching whether weaker traffic will force another round of earnings-estimate cuts across the restaurant complex.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming in on First Watch (FWRG)

First Watch’s shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 12 months ago when the stock gained 10.6% on the news that the company reported strong third-quarter results that beat revenue expectations and offered an upbeat full-year outlook. The restaurant chain's total revenues grew 25.6% year on year to $316 million, surpassing analyst estimates. This growth was driven by a 7.1% increase in same-store sales and the opening of new restaurants. First Watch's earnings per share (EPS) increased to $0.05 from $0.03 in the same quarter last year. While this EPS figure was $0.02 below analysts' predictions, investors seemingly focused on the strong sales performance. Adding to the positive sentiment, the company's full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance of $123 million at the midpoint was above Wall Street's estimates, signaling confidence in its continued performance. Adjusted EBITDA is a key measure of profitability.

First Watch is down 27.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $11.16 per share, it is trading 40.2% below its 52-week high of $18.66 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of First Watch’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $512.11.
