What Happened?
Shares of membership-only discount retailer BJ’s Wholesale Club (NYSE: BJ) jumped 3.9% in the afternoon session after DA Davidson analyst Michael Baker reiterated a Buy rating and a $108 price target on the company following a warehouse club tour. According to Investing.com, the firm’s Texas bus tour stopped at a BJ’s, a Costco, a Sam’s Club, and a Tractor Supply. Baker said BJ’s could speed up new clubs. The current plan is 25 to 30 openings in 2027 and 2028, about 5% growth in each of those years, up from 3% to 4% a year from 2022 through 2024 and from flat to 2% before that. He said early results from newer clubs, and the share warehouse clubs can still take, are leading management to consider pushing that pace further.
The shares were trading at $99.72, up 4% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
BJ’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 3 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 5 months ago when the stock dropped 9.1% on the news that the company reported first-quarter calendar 2026 results that featured softer profitability and a cautious outlook, which appeared to disappoint investors. Although revenue grew 9.9% year-over-year to $5.66 billion and beat expectations, adjusted earnings per share of $1.10 declined compared to the same period in the previous year. Additionally, the company's free cash flow was negative at -$42.05 million, a sharp reversal from the positive $67.6 million generated in the same quarter last year. Investors were also likely concerned by management maintaining its full-year guidance rather than raising it, suggesting a cautious view of the future despite the strong top-line growth. This combination of declining year-over-year profit, negative cash flow, and a steady outlook appeared to outweigh the strong sales figures, weighing on the stock.
BJ's is up 8.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $99.72 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $102.78 from February 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of BJ’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,802.
