What happened?

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after crude oil prices plunged more than 6% on hopes of Middle East diplomatic progress, lowering fuel and transportation cost projections across commercial supply chains.

In market coverage carried by CNBC, the industrial sector advanced almost 2% during morning trade as capital rotated toward cyclical groups. Transport operators paced the rally, with United Airlines climbing 6.5% and Southwest Airlines advancing 4.2%, as reported by the Associated Press.

Crude prices retreated as Brent fell 6.7% to $105.87 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate dropped to roughly $97 after Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated the administration prefers a peaceful resolution with Iran, CNBC reported. Cyclical momentum was reinforced by the Institute for Supply Management, which reported its factory activity gauge rose to 55.5 in October from 54.5 in September, exceeding the 54.5 consensus from economists surveyed by Reuters.

Fuel and freight represent primary variable costs across commercial aviation and capital goods logistics. Although the survey's prices paid gauge registered an elevated 75.2, pointing to persistent manufacturing cost pressure, the sudden pullback in benchmark crude provides immediate operating expense relief.

When energy overhead eases while factory production accelerates, industrial operators capture operating leverage from simultaneous cost savings and durable order volume. That dynamic accelerates capital rotation out of defensives and into cyclical networks whose margins widen immediately as transport expenses decline.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming in on VSE Corporation (VSEC)

VSE Corporation’s shares are very volatile and have had 28 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 7 days ago when the stock gained 4.2% on the news that U.S. stocks climbed across the board as investors positioned for an eventful week defined by a key Federal Reserve interest rate announcement and high-profile corporate earnings releases. Morningstar reported that roughly 36% of S&P 500 companies—including technology heavyweights Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft—are scheduled to report their quarterly results this week. Concurrently, the Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its latest monetary policy decision on Wednesday, with money markets assigning a 90% probability that the central bank will leave the Fed Funds rate on hold, according to Morningstar.

Despite traders juggling fresh Middle East conflicts and artificial-intelligence valuation worries, Morningstar noted that anticipation surrounding resilient corporate health helped lift benchmark futures into positive territory. Morningstar highlighted data indicating that analysts expect S&P 500 companies to report a massive 30% jump in third-quarter earnings compared to a year ago. Furthermore, Morningstar cited commentary from BondBloxx Investment Management suggesting that the market views this week's expected Fed hold as merely a temporary pause rather than the definitive end of the tightening cycle.

Ultimately, Morningstar explained that falling Treasury yields in the run-up to Wednesday's central bank decision provided further support for the broader equity rally prior to the opening bell.

VSE Corporation is down 11.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $160.71 per share, it is trading 34% below its 52-week high of $243.48 from August 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of VSE Corporation’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,930.
