"We are pleased with the underlying performance of our business, despite significantly unfavorable weather, calendar impacts and international headwinds during the quarter," said Marc Swanson, CEO of United Parks & Resorts Inc. "Excluding the impact of these unusual headwinds, which amounted to approximately 325,000 visits, our attendance would have been up. Our attendance during the quarter was also impacted by a planned reduction in promotional admissions products which amounted to more than 100,000 visits.   We delivered another quarter of growth in total revenue per capita, driven by continued strong in-park execution and improved admissions product pricing and management.  We are continuing to make progress across many of our key initiatives and continue to have significant opportunity to improve execution."

Revenue growth

A company’s long-term revenue performance is one signal of its overall quality. Any business can deliver a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long term. Over the last five years, United Parks & Resorts grew its revenue at a weak 5% compounded annual growth rate, falling short of our standard for the consumer discretionary sector.

United Parks & Resorts quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within consumer discretionary, product cycles are short and revenue can be hit-driven due to rapidly changing trends and consumer preferences. United Parks & Resorts’s performance shows it grew in the past but relinquished its gains over the last two years, as its revenue fell by 2.6% annually. Note that Covid hurt United Parks & Resorts’s business in 2020 and part of 2021, and it rebounded strongly thereafter. United Parks & Resorts year-on-year revenue growth

United Parks & Resorts also discloses its number of visitors, which reached 6.47 million in the latest quarter. Over the last two years, United Parks & Resorts’s visitors averaged 2.9% year-on-year declines. This was in line with revenue growth during the same period, indicating that monetization stayed fairly consistent. United Parks & Resorts visitors

This quarter, United Parks & Resorts missed Wall Street’s consensus estimates and reported an uninspiring 1.1% year-on-year revenue decline, generating $506.5 million of revenue.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 3.2% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. While this projection suggests its newer products and services will fuel better top-line performance, it is still below average for the sector.

Operating margin

Operating margin is a key measure of profitability. Think of it as net income, the bottom line, excluding the impact of taxes and interest on debt, which are less connected to business fundamentals.

United Parks & Resorts’s operating margin has been trending down over the last 12 months and averaged 20.8% over the last two years. The company’s profitability was mediocre for a consumer discretionary business and shows it couldn’t pass its higher operating expenses onto its customers.

United Parks & Resorts trailing 12-month operating margin (GAAP)

This quarter, United Parks & Resorts generated an operating margin of 27.8%, down 1.9 percentage points year on year. This modest reduction indicates the company’s overall cost structure has been relatively stable.

Earnings per share

Long-term changes in earnings per share, or EPS, matter for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

United Parks & Resorts’s EPS grew at a 9.3% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. This performance was better than its revenue growth but doesn’t tell us much about its business quality because its operating margin improvement was less than that of its peers.

United Parks & Resorts trailing 12-month EPS (GAAP)

In Q3, United Parks & Resorts reported EPS of $1.74, up from $1.61 in the same quarter last year. Despite growing year on year, EPS missed analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects United Parks & Resorts’s full-year EPS to grow 47.4% from $2.67 to $3.94, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from United Parks & Resorts’s Q3 results

United Parks & Resorts delivered a disappointing quarter with few positives: EPS missed Wall Street’s consensus estimates, and revenue also fell slightly short. Shares remained flat at $34.19 immediately after the report.

United Parks & Resorts had a disappointing quarter, but that alone doesn’t determine whether the stock is a buy. The latest quarter matters, but not nearly as much as longer-term fundamentals and valuation when making that decision.
