What happened?

Shares of recreational boats manufacturer Malibu Boats (NASDAQ: MBUU) fell 14.9% in the morning session after the company reported quarterly net sales that fell modestly below its guided range amid softer retail demand in its ski and wake boat category.

According to a company press release, Malibu Boats reported that a softer summer retail environment and disciplined wholesale shipments kept net sales modestly below its guided range and constrained adjusted EBITDA for the three months ended September 30, 2026. For the period, net sales grew 29.9% to $252.9 million and unit volume rose 15.1% to 1,299 units, while gross profit increased 35.5% to $37.8 million. GAAP net income reached $6.1 million, or $0.30 per diluted share, adjusted net income was $0.15 per share, and adjusted EBITDA rose 21.7% to $14.3 million.

What is the market telling us

Malibu Boats’s shares are quite volatile and have had 17 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Malibu Boats and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 6 months ago when the stock gained 22.5% on the news that the company reported first-quarter 2026 results that significantly beat analyst expectations and provided an encouraging full-year outlook.

The recreational boat manufacturer posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.56, crushing forecasts by 54.5%, while revenue of $235.7 million was up 3.1% year-on-year and surpassed estimates by 10.3%. The strong results were complemented by a positive forecast, with the company's full-year revenue guidance of $883 million and EBITDA guidance of $73 million both coming in above Wall Street's projections. Although the company's operating margin declined compared to the same quarter last year, investors focused on the substantial earnings and revenue beats, which suggested a potential turnaround.

Malibu Boats is down 30.7% since the beginning of the year, and at $20.10 per share, it is trading 41.9% below its 52-week high of $34.61 from February 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Malibu Boats’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $257.30.
