The recent National Night Out held on October 1, 2019, in Thomas R. Wussow Park has been called a “huge success” by those who organized it. With food, music, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and families from all over the North Houston area, this event provided an important opportunity for community members and the local law enforcement offices to come together in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

“At North Houston District, our goal is to promote Urban Development and Public Safety in our community and sponsoring the National Night Out celebration each year is one example of how we do this,” stated North Houston District spokesperson Alexa Valencia. “One of the hits of our event this year was the annual tug-of-war competition between the Houston Police Department officers and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.”

The National Night Out program started in August 1984 after Mark Peskin created the National Association of Town Watch. Since that time, the event has grown to include millions of people and participants.

“It’s easy to lose sight of what really matters and, especially with the prevalence of technology,” continued Valencia. “However, now, more than ever, it’s important to reach out and connect with our neighbors. Even though home security systems provide some protection, they can’t help you get to know anyone who lives nearby, and they don’t provide support in times of need. It’s real connections with real people that matter.”

This year’s event took place on October 1st and drew a huge crowd. The local law enforcement presence, children’s games, tug-of-war, barbeque competition, and other events are going to be even bigger and better next year.
