aequum White Paper Offers Guidance on Delivering a Tech-Driven, Decisive Blow Against Medical Balance Billing

aequum LLC, acting on behalf of more than 400 self-insured health plans and their participants, announces the publication of its second in a series of white papers addressing the No Surprises Act (NSA). Titled Tech-Driven aequum Delivers Decisive Blow Against Balance Billing, this white paper speaks to the challenge self-funded health plans experience with balance billing, also known as “surprise billing,” and includes the benefits of partnering with aequum for strategic and compliant solutions and use of reference-based pricing (RBP).

“Balance billing is an insidious and costly healthcare problem that threatens the financial stability and sustainability of self-funded plans and negatively impacts participant expense and engagement,” says Christine Cooper, CEO of aequum. “We provide this white paper to help health plans understand their rights under new legislation and price transparency mandates designed to reveal the true cost of provider health services before receiving care and submitting a claim.”

The NSA was signed into federal law after years of negotiation between health plan insurers, employers and providers. Taking effect January 2022, the NSA covers participants in employer-sponsored health plans and aims to provide protection from surprise medical bills for certain emergency services as well as services received from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities.

“The best response to the NSA is an approach that is both strategic and compliance-oriented,” says Jack Towarnicky, member of aequum. “RBP is one of the fastest growing solutions in health benefits cost management to avoid unreasonable or excessive provider charges – potentially lowering the cost of coverage and employee point of purchase cost sharing.”

Cooper explains that aequum achieves fairness by leveling the playing field of medical billing, adding, “We serve as an agent of change through best practices that add insight and protection through our data-driven solutions and legal advocacy.”
