The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Michael S. Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education Announces the Launch of 'Harvey(R) Premier'

MIAMI, FL / ACCESS Newswire / January 15, 2026 / The University of Miami's Michael S. Gordon Center recently announced the launch of the new Harvey Premier, expanding upon a legacy of over 50 years in medical simulation. The Harvey® Premier elevates medical simulation to new heights.

Origins of the Harvey® Medical Simulator

While practicing medicine as a cardiologist, Dr. Michael S. Gordon found that airline pilots frequently became his patients. They often brought up the subject of flight simulators during conversation, a topic that caught Dr. Gordon's attention. Over time, he came to believe that a simulation might be a more effective method for medical students to learn bedside cardiac examination skills.

When he began work on this initiative, Dr. Gordon encountered the reality that suitable technology did not exist for the project. Never one to believe in failure, he remained determined to complete his solution. After years of dedicated work, his resolve was rewarded when he presented Harvey®: The Cardio-Pulmonary Patient Simulator at the American Heart Association.

How Harvey® Rebuilt Medical Curricula

Recognizing the success of the Harvey® manikin, Dr. Gordon and his team began a redevelopment of the UMedic Computer Curriculum. The pre-hospital and emergency training programs that emerged from this initiative are now responsible for training tens of thousands of first responders across more than 800 Florida agencies, as well as over 2,000 in the United States and abroad.

Two Ways of Continuing a Legacy

Today, Dr. Barry Issenberg serves as the director of the Michael S. Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation, which was named in honor of Dr. Gordon in 2012. Though Dr. Gordon passed away in 2017, the team of physicians, clinicians, engineers, and instructors continues to elevate the center and its initiatives.

Now, that team has developed Harvey Premier, a portable version of the simulator that trains thousands each year.

Dr. Gordon's wife, Lynda, remains deeply engaged with the Gordon Center. She continues to run the Michael S. Gordon Charitable Foundation they established together in 2010, as well as an endowed chair at the medical school. Lynda has also begun writing a children's book series inspired by her husband's life and career, encouraging young readers to "Dream Big, Work Hard, and Help Others," as Michael did.

Harvey® Premier and the Gordon Center's Future

Both the Harvey® Premier and Lynda carry Dr. Gordon's legacy forward, developing projects that change the lives of others. The Harvey Premier system is now helping learners at over 700 institutions across 55 countries deliver better results for patients in need, a development that is sure to impact numerous lives.

About Harvey® Premier

The Harvey Premier is the latest iteration of the world's first cardio-pulmonary patient simulator, weighing half that of its original version and costing less. The device is also accompanied by a variety of instructional materials, including learner manuals and standardized patient cases.
