$75 Million to Be Invested in U. S. Steel’s Alabama Plant to Advance American Manufacturing

Board of Directors Approves State-of-the-Art Premium Thread Line Facility, Boosting Production Efficiency and Market Position

United States Steel Corporation (“U. S. Steel”) today announced a major capital investment of $75 million to install a new Premium Thread Line at its Fairfield Tubular Operations in Alabama. This project, recently approved by the U. S. Steel Board of Directors, demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to growth and American-made manufacturing, and is part of a larger capital deployment strategy in partnership with Nippon Steel.

“U. S. Steel’s investment in the Fairfield Premium Thread Line is a bold step forward for American manufacturing, our workforce, and our communities,” said David B. Burritt, President and CEO of U. S. Steel. “This project exemplifies our commitment to growth, innovation, and delivering high-quality products made in the USA. At U. S. Steel, we are well on our way to being better and bigger...forged in America, and built to be the best!”

Fairfield Tubular Operations, located in Fairfield, Alabama, specializes in producing high-quality, American-made steel pipe and tube products—primarily serving the energy sector, including oil and gas customers. The complex includes an advanced electric arc furnace and rounds caster that feeds the Fairfield Tubular Operation. Fairfield is focused on efficiency, safety, and meeting growing market demand for premium tubular solutions.

“The Fairfield Premium Thread Line marks a pivotal advancement for U. S. Steel Tubular Solutions and our customers. We’re strengthening our ability to deliver high-quality, American-made tubular products with greater efficiency and reliability. This investment not only supports the energy sector’s evolving needs, but also creates new jobs and reinforces our commitment to innovation and operational excellence in Alabama and beyond,” said Scott Dorn, Senior Vice President, Tubular Solutions.

The Fairfield Premium Thread Line will increase U. S. Steel’s threading capabilities and capacity, significantly improving production efficiency through advanced automation and process upgrades. The new facility will feature enhanced safety features, and best-in-class equipment, operating within the Fairfield Tubular campus. U. S. Steel plans to begin construction of this proposed new line shortly once all approvals have been received.

Key Benefits and Strategic Impact

  • Expanded Capacity: The investment allows U. S. Steel to thread additional volume at the Tubular campus, simplifying the premium supply chain.
  • Efficiency and Safety: Automated processes and upgraded equipment will maximize value capture, reduce costs, and ensure superior safety for employees.
  • Market Leadership: The new line supports growing market demand for premium threaded products, positioning U. S. Steel as a leading supplier of high-quality, American-made tubular products.
  • American Jobs: The project will bring 44 permanent jobs to Fairfield, 40 of which will be USW-represented positions. We expect the construction of the project to bring about 250 positions.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Once operational, the new line will have minimal impact on emissions at Fairfield Tubular Operations and will incorporate environmental controls such as mist eliminators and dust collection systems to manage emissions responsibly.
