What Happened?

Shares of wireless chipmaker Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) fell 5.8% in the afternoon session after Qualcomm pulled back as rally momentum faded, a Samsung 2nm pricing standoff left manufacturing talks drifting toward 2027, and chip stocks joined a broader tech selloff tied to rising yields.

StreetInsider reported that support from the Snapdragon Summit, an Apple patent renewal, and an AWS partnership weakened as trading opened, with shares near about $190.51 in morning trade. TrendForce and Digitimes have reported that Qualcomm’s discussions with Samsung on 2nm foundry work remain stuck on pricing and yields, with announced 2nm products still slated for TSMC and Samsung talks potentially stretching into 2027.

Separately, according to an SEC Form 4, CEO Cristiano Amon’s family trust sold 10,000 shares at $195 on Sept. 21 for about $1.95 million under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted Dec. 12, 2025. Those items landed into the same rate tape pressing the sector: Morningstar/Dow Jones said the 10-year yield climbed to 5.218% as oil rose and markets priced further Fed tightening, with technology — including chip names — leading early declines.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Qualcomm’s shares are very volatile and have had 28 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 3 days ago when the stock gained 5.7% on the news that the stock rebounded from the previous session after the company announced the renewal of its global patent license agreement with Apple. According to a press release published by Qualcomm, the renewed agreement will officially take effect on April 1, 2027, allowing the iPhone maker to continue utilizing the chipmaker's patented wireless technologies in exchange for ongoing royalty payments. Because Apple represents a massive portion of the global smartphone market, securing this long-term extension provides crucial stability and removes a significant source of uncertainty for the chipmaker. Investors have actively bid up the stock over the past two sessions, treating the announcement as a major de-risking event that provides clear, long-term visibility into Qualcomm's high-margin future licensing revenue.

Ultimately, this continuation rally reflects Wall Street's relief that Qualcomm has locked down its most important licensing partnership well into the next decade, guaranteeing a reliable cash flow stream even if broader hardware upgrade cycles experience near-term fluctuations.

Qualcomm is up 9.8% since the beginning of the year, but at $190.01 per share, it is still trading 24.3% below its 52-week high of $251.02 from May 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Qualcomm’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,463.
